What is Computational Fluid Dynamics - CFD? What is the Importance of CFD?

Over the last few years we've heard discussing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) as it pertains for fluid flow study.


So, what's CFD?


CFD is a set of computational simulation techniques, used to obtain and interpret computational solutions for the conservation equations for physical amount of interest in a flow, which are:




- Mass conservation;

- Momentum and energy conservation.


These simulation techniques predict physical and/or chemical phenomena occurring in flows. They'll simulate the physical phenomena in a approximate way to the differential equations. Those differences refer to errors or residuals. To solve problems in Computational Fluid Dynamics - CFD, it's necessary to specify the issue, i.e. its geometry, flow conditions and the requirements for simulation (precision level, require time, solution from the interest parameters).


What is actually the CFD importance?


In scSTREAM it is possible to model and measure the fluid flow performance in our study model. The effective use of CFD simulation supplies a set of advantages in comparison to theoretical and experimental studies:


- Purchase and operation inexpensive;

- Details about the fluid flow studied;

- Permits the quick change of parameters within the flow analysis;

- Allows simulating flows in detailed and sophisticated geometries and study phenomena impossible to do in experimental model (ex: explosions).


Despite all, the CFD will not substitute the thought and experience; we should always make a strategy of two, to interpret the results. The comparison with experience gives us the accuracy achieved from the simulation.
